The jeep, out of its crate

Truck, ¼-ton, 4×4

The American Bantam Car Company of Butler, Pennsylvania, built the first one for the U.S. Army in 1940. Willys-Overland and Ford built about 640,000 to the standardized design during the Second World War.

Many were shipped overseas in wooden crates and put together where they landed. This exhibit opens one of those crates, then shows how the jeep was put together, part by part.

The model is the standardized jeep of 1943, the Willys MB, built from the Army's manuals and drawings. Design: American Bantam Car Company with the U.S. Army, developed by Willys-Overland and Ford.
